What is the difference between a sector and an industry?
A sector and an industry are both ways of classifying companies in the stock market, but they differ in scope. A sector is a broad category that groups businesses with similar economic activities, while an industry is a more specific subdivision within a sector that contains companies offering similar products or services.

For example, the Information Technology sector includes businesses involved in technology-related activities. Within this sector are industries such as software, semiconductor manufacturing, computer hardware, and IT consulting. Likewise, the Healthcare sector contains industries like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, and healthcare providers. This hierarchical structure helps investors organise and analyse the market more effectively.

Sectors are useful for understanding how broad economic trends affect groups of companies. Changes in interest rates, inflation, consumer spending, or government policies can have varying impacts on different sectors. Industries, on the other hand, allow investors to compare companies with direct competitors. Analysing an industry can provide deeper insights into competitive advantages, market share, innovation, and growth potential.

Understanding the difference between sectors and industries also supports better portfolio diversification. Investing across multiple sectors can reduce exposure to risks that affect one part of the economy. Within a sector, comparing industries helps identify areas that may be outperforming or lagging.

Financial analysts and fund managers frequently use sector and industry classifications to evaluate investment opportunities, measure performance, and build balanced portfolios. While sectors provide a high-level overview of the economy, industries offer a more detailed view of specific business activities. Recognising the distinction enables investors to make more informed decisions, identify emerging opportunities, and better understand how individual companies fit into the broader market.
