What is market structure in trading?
Market structure in trading refers to the way prices move in the market by forming highs and lows over time. It helps traders understand whether the market is moving upward, downward, or sideways. By analysing these price movements, traders can identify the current trend, recognise possible reversals, and make more informed trading decisions. Market structure is widely used in forex, stocks, cryptocurrencies, and other financial markets.

There are three main types of market structure: bullish, bearish, and ranging. A bullish market structure forms when the price consistently creates higher highs and higher lows, indicating that buyers are in control. A bearish market structure develops when the price creates lower highs and lower lows, suggesting that sellers have the upper hand. A ranging market occurs when the price moves between established support and resistance levels without forming a clear upward or downward trend.

Traders also use concepts such as Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHoCH) to understand potential changes in price direction. A BOS occurs when the price breaks an important swing high or low, often supporting the continuation of the existing trend. A CHoCH may indicate an early shift in market behaviour and the possibility of a reversal.

Understanding market structure can help traders identify potential entry points, place stop-loss orders, and set profit targets more effectively. It can also be combined with support and resistance, liquidity zones, candlestick patterns, and volume analysis to strengthen trading decisions.

However, market structure does not guarantee future price movements. False breakouts and sudden volatility can lead to unexpected losses. Traders should combine market structure analysis with proper risk management and a consistent trading plan to improve their decision-making over time.
