What is a breakout retest?
A breakout retest is a common price action event that occurs when an asset breaks through an important support, resistance, trendline, or chart pattern level and then returns to test that same area again. Traders often watch this retest because it can provide additional confirmation that the breakout is genuine rather than a false move.

For example, suppose a stock repeatedly struggles to move above $100. If price finally breaks above $100 and then pulls back toward that level, the previous resistance may become new support. If buyers defend the $100 area and price begins moving higher again, traders may interpret this as a bullish breakout retest.

A bearish breakout retest works in the opposite direction. If price breaks below an important support level and later rises back toward it, the former support may act as resistance. Rejection from that level can provide confirmation for a potential continuation lower.

The main advantage of waiting for a retest is that traders may obtain a more controlled entry and a clearly defined invalidation level. Instead of chasing price after a large breakout candle, traders can wait for the market to return to the broken level and observe how price reacts.

However, not every breakout produces a retest. Sometimes price continues strongly without looking back, causing traders who wait to miss the opportunity. A retest can also fail, with price moving back through the breakout level and invalidating the setup.

Therefore, traders should consider factors such as market structure, volume, momentum, timeframe, and risk-to-reward ratio. A breakout retest is best viewed as a confirmation opportunity rather than a guarantee of continued price movement.
