What is the difference between a node and a validator?
A node and a validator are both important components of a cryptocurrency network, but they perform different roles. A node is a computer running blockchain software that connects to the network, shares information, and verifies transactions and blocks according to the blockchain's rules. A validator, on the other hand, is a participant in a proof-of-stake blockchain responsible for helping propose or attest to blocks and supporting the network's consensus process.

The main difference is that not every node is a validator. For example, a full node can independently verify transactions and blocks without staking cryptocurrency or participating directly in block production. Its purpose is to help maintain the network's integrity, enforce protocol rules, and distribute blockchain data to other participants.

Validators have additional responsibilities. In proof-of-stake networks such as Ethereum, validators typically deposit or have cryptocurrency staked to participate in consensus. They may receive rewards for performing their duties correctly, while certain protocol violations or failures can result in penalties. Operating a validator also involves technical requirements, reliable connectivity, and ongoing maintenance.

Another important distinction is that running a node does not automatically generate cryptocurrency rewards. Validators, however, may earn rewards depending on their network's rules, performance, and economic conditions. Their responsibilities and risks vary across blockchain protocols.

In simple terms, a node helps verify and communicate blockchain information, while a validator participates in the process of reaching consensus and securing a proof-of-stake network. Some validators run their own full nodes, meaning the two roles can overlap. Understanding this distinction helps crypto users choose whether they simply want to independently verify blockchain activity or actively participate in network consensus and potentially earn staking rewards.
